Should I quit YouTube until I'm rebooted?

Hi guys, right now I'm faced with a conundrum. I've done well with removing most social media from my life due to their triggering nature: Instagram and Twitter I used to use daily but I now see as pointless time-wasters. However the two social media sites I never quit were Twitch and Youtube. Twitch isn't that problematic for me: I only enjoy a couple of streamers, and while there definitely are triggers on Twitch (y'know... borderline camgirls) I never come across any since I simply never browse that part of the site.

What is becoming increasingly problematic for me however is YouTube. If you've been on YouTube, you're probably aware of the "thumbnail metagame". The little image that's meant to grab your attention. Well, what grabs attention more than a pair of boobs or ass? The content creators I watch usually don't fall to this level of clickbait, but because of the sheer volume of new videos YouTube throws at you, I often find highly triggering pictures inadvertently showing up in my recommended.

I'm writing this on the back of getting highly triggered from seeing a thumbnail that was essentially softcore porn. This is far from the first time I've been triggered by this site and I'm worried it won't be the last. I think it might be a good idea to quit the site completely until I'm rebooted, but I'm not sure if that's too brash. There is a way using a utility called youtube-dl I can automate downloads of videos from content creators I'm subscribed to as they're uploaded, which might be a good middle way.

Hi there, same for me I've cut off social media for a year now but I just recently got back to snapchat and I've been using YouTube like always, never really quitted cause then I would have been died of boredom, and about the triggers, As for religious reasons I avoid any sexual images and content so yeah, heres what I did I created a new account with people who i really watch that dont show any click bait images of girls and any sexual contents, hope I could be of some help.

  3. YouTube is my biggest time-waster. I highly recommend limiting or eliminating your Tube time. But find something extremely fun and positive to replace it. I usually avoid getting clickbaited and I don't think YouTube has ever led to a relapse, but what is it good for? Maybe documentaries and educational stuff. I use it to learn new tunes for my various instruments. Other than that, fuck it.

YouTube does have some helpful videos. It all depends on how disciplined you are.

I'm down to WhatsApp but still sometimes get potentially triggering videos in some groups.

YouTube may be one of the titans of social media, since it can swallow literally whole days into it! It's also a lot more tricky to deal with it, because you get a feeling that you are doing some enjoyable/productive stuff while watching. While it may be true for some time spent on the site, I'd say that a good amount is just useless time wasting. Also, the algorithm never stops working on all these platforms, and you never know the countless ways that you can be manipulated on that matter. I'm afraid that it's needed much discipline and self-control to just get the positive effects from YouTube, so I'd recommend some time away from it in order to establish those lines. It's what I've been trying to do on the last days, and you can start to perceive some hidden ways the site can influence your behavior and thought processes. So I'd advice: use it with much moderation.

  9. Totally agreed with this point. I left the group and since then WhatsApp is safe to use.

  10. Lot of it has to do it with "FEAR OF MISSING OUT".

Don't forget Advertisements are the biggest source of income for google. Each of us are contributing to their revenue.

It is when we sit and think about the binge watching one has done, that we realize that it is a problem. Binge watching and binge-everything is really a new phenomena of this new age. Continuous dose of novel videos with whole click bait stuffs is definitely hooking.

No YouTubers will talk about as it will be counter-productive to block the very viewer on their own channel.
