I came across this video of Dr. Andrew Huberman discussing the causes behind foot fetishes (and fetishes in general), which I found very intriguing, as I've never stumbled upon this explanation before (as a person with a fetish, I've researched several explanations on the internet). Although the discussion was quite chaotic, due to the interruptions of the podcast hosts, I'll try to summarize the major points below in a logical order.

    Arousal Template and Objectification

Dr. Huberman presents the idea of an "arousal template" that each person has, which refers to things that evoke sexual arousal to a varying degree. While for some people it can be broad and rich, for others it's narrow and specific. In a clinical sense, a fetish can be thought as a particular behavior that is heavily required for someone to get aroused. While for some people a fetish can be subtle and healthy, a clinical fetish can be problematic given the need for situations and people that can incorporate it systematically.

He also describes the fact that mating is a complex behavior of possibilities and negotiation, and emphasizes that sexual attraction is notably about partner objectification (at least during the initial phases of mating)

    The Neurobiology of Fetishes

Ok, so we objectify our sexual partners, and some people have the tendency to focus on particular things during sex (body parts or behaviors). Why does a significant amount of population have these particular templates or arousal?

One of the hypotheses that Dr. Huberman provides for the case of feet fetish, is a relatively well known one. Sensory maps in the brain have shown higher sensitivity for specific areas of the body, such as genitals and feet, which happen to be located adjacently (increasing the probability of cross-talk). For example, people have been reported to stretch their toes during an orgasm (interestingly, people with an amputated foot have reported experiencing an orgasm in the phantom foot). Of course, this could explain why some people could be aroused by sensations in the feet, but in my opinion, not necessarily the full typical arousal template of a foot fetishist.

The other explanation, which can be applied more broadly about fetishes, was based on the observation that many classic fetishes, including feet, have the potential to be sites of infection (historically, this was true for feet). For example, people often have fetishes for bodily fluids (e.g. urine) or even feces.
In general, animal brains are wired in a way that we approach certain things as 'appetitive' (we want to smell or taste them) or 'aversive' (we want to avoid them, to avoid getting sick). People appear to develop fetishes, not to random objects, but to things which can create a sense of edginess. Although most people have an aversive response to feet, urine or feces, there might be a flip or 'miswiring' in those who find these things appetitive and sexually attractive. He also comments on the idea of being on such edge of expectation, as it happens with visual suggestions/hints (e.g. fetishes with clothing, which reveal part of the body)

Although he admits that we don't know the cause of such potential effect, I personally find this hypothesis very realistic and intuitive. I think there are several examples in psychology, where people associate risky behaviors with positive feelings. How this intertwines with sexuality, and why evolution kept such thing over centuries, is not clear.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on this, and any theories that could explain such flipping and miswiring.

Interesting topic and discussion @DTournesol. The thing that perhaps isn't accounted for is the kind of false-fetishism that pornography triggers. I'm sure there is material out there, but fetishism now also heavily revolves around the pixelated, cyber / online domain, where the full range of senses are not activated.

No doubt many of us here will have miswiring due to reinforcing viewing of artificial stimuli, rather than trying the real thing (often due to lack of acceptance / opportunity). It seems like this can enhance the need for that fetish, despite the lack of opportunity to indulge in real life.

These are just my feelings and experiences... alas I am unable to do too much research of my own as my devices are blocked on certain key trigger words, fetish being one of them :emoji_expressionless:

  3. I’ve done some research on fetishes and some professionals believe that it has to do with a connection to something that happened to us when we were young. Something that we grew an affinity for without realizing it. My fetishes are adult diapers and women’s underwear. I remember always being curious about wearing diapers growing up. And then the internet came along and I found people who had that same affinity. And then I started wearing them while M-ing, and the rest is history.

I have been able to control it for the most part. It all has to do with mental toughness. If we allow ourselves to think about these things for too long, we won’t be strong enough to resist.

Ok so I am someone who has had a foot fetish since childhood literally, I used to do prone masturbation since I was maybe 4-5 years old by getting triggered by feet , so the point that the areas related to feet and genitals is related closely in brain and there maybe some intertwining makes complete sense to me. Plus I've heard my mom saying that when I was in her womb she used to keep my father's socks with her for some reason , you know pregnant women, anything can appeal to them, this might have triggered the intertwining in my brain. But what's good is that it's not like I don't like normal things, I am equally triggered by normal female sexual body parts. And regarding fetishes being porn induced, I never got a fetish from porn, porn didn't even exist 20 years ago when I was 4 and I already had a foot fetish . I agree some people might get fetish from there, like one of my friends developed latex fetish because of porn. But yeah foot fetish is mostly a kind of birth defect in my opinion, it might get worse though if we keep acting on it. I have another theory from mathematics point of view, it's that curves and curvy things feel aesthetic and feet come under that category curvy so yeah some people might find them aesthetic in general.
One more point I have is that I've heard that rebooting takes you back to your normal sexuality, I've been on 100+ days twice and both times I felt like foot fetish was the cause for my relapse, though I never went beyond 5 months of abstinence from porn and masturbation so I can't say about that.
But yeah if you keep working on your goals, develoo good habits and stay focused any kind of urge can be controlled and foot fetish isn't something that needs to be obsessed about especially because foot fetish pept are attracted to normal parts as well if they don't indulge excessively in foot fetish content.

If you find any of this intriguing, feel free to reply

I think everything is a fetish..to a fetishist. apostle Paul says "to the impure, everything is impure"
so, i think *race* is a fetish. black women,or asian women etc...a totally normal thing, but it is-made a fetish factor by lustful men.
same applies to haircut, body types(muscle mass, proportions, etc). We should see things as it is .without adding our mental afflictions upon reality

  6. Read the book "Unwanted" from Jay Stringer. He describes perfectly how our current unwanted sexual behavior shows the way to our root issues.

I suffered from quite some fetishes in the past (crossdressing, agp, sissy hypno, femdom etc) but I don't need them any more because I was able to face my root issues.
