Can porn permanently damage your dopamine receptors?

    I'm now 30.

Started nofap at 25 years old and managed a full year long streak. Since then, I've been having sex with mild success. I've always dabbled with porn the last few years, but nowhere near as much as i was when I was an addict.

Maybe watch one every 2-3 months, and not like full blown edging either.

Well yesterday, I Orgasmed during porn for the first time in 8 months. I have been having sex with mild/moderate success since that relapse. Yet after yesterday's orgasm with porn, my dick is shrivelled, my brain is foggy, my eyes feel sore. What the hell is happening to me?

Have I permanently done damage this time? This feels worse than when I was addicted to porn for God sake!

According to my knowledge of dopamine systems, when you engage in high dopaminergic activities like porn or masturbation, it does not damages your receptors, actually it floods your brain with dopamine. Now as you know, our body needs to be balanced, in order to control this issue of excessive dopamine, your brain simply makes more receptor so more dopamine gets processed per time. This basically means you will need more dopamine to be satisfied next time. As normal activities of life don't give much dopamine, you soon lose interest in them and slip into the bottomless pit of PMO.

Luckily it is completely reversible change, you know your body needs to be balanced, last time you created imbalance by excessive dopamine, this time do the opposite! This is called dopamine fast or dopamine-detox. Basically abstain from all pleasurable stuff for some time. Due to this your dopamine levels will drop below normal. This will create a imbalance but the exact opposite one. So your brain will balance dopamine levels by removing receptor from your brain making you take less dopamine for satisfaction, so life will become more enjoyable!

But looks like abstinence didn't worked for you. Most likely it is not caused by some dopamine problem but something else. I guess after a long streak you might have improved by a lot but now you have again relapsed, those benefits have suddenly disappeared, taking you to such situation.
    Best luck for your recovery!

@Gavalar09 , I doubt you're permanently damaged. Just keep away and stay away from porn. Your dopamine receptors are still affected and you can't watch porn ever or this will happen again. Once you got PIED, it's permanent in a sense that it leaves a blueprint/shortcut neruocircuitry for inducing porn changes in your brain - unless you stay away from porn. You need to focus on improving your life.

    You can do it!

What about dopamine desensitization? How does that factor in?

This sounds like part of the rebalancing process. Try not to feel bad after a relapse because it can drive you to use repeatedly. Try to get back to abstention. You already have some good experiences.

Not sure because it varies for people. But the longer you are off porn, the better it will get. Sometimes you have to build up time with a relapse here or there. Just don't beat yourself up and keep at it.

  9. I think this is where a lot of guys mess up, me included. You will always LOVE porn so every time your brain sees it, it latches onto it every stronger because it knows that you are trying to separate it from porn. So occasional use will mess you up. I know it's really hard to accept, but you will probably always have PIED problems until you cut out porn for good.

  10. I was doing good 6 months ago. My old self started to come back. Then it took 1 relapse to get me confused and back to square one. #NotWorthit

  11. You've wrote a Daily Journal regarding the hell you are going through, especially the pain - you were having! Mentally and even Accidents that will make you not come back to that addiction!

The brain learns through pain! Keep that in my mind! Keep remi d the brain about your Pain! - Because pleasure might take place and ruin your life in the long run!

  12. I've been searching this topic for quiet some time now, regarding permanent damage - I don't think we could damage our brain that much because we fon't use drug chemicales that are foreign to our bodies like drugs, but still it's a brain drug!

So the best option would be, take the addiction seriously and to work on it on a slow pace!

I've heard that it takes 90 days for complete recovery, I guess you've heard it too ? Well, I guesd it's true!

But it only happens for short term users!

There is a simple equation that will work for almost everybody:

Take the number of months you were consuming Porn × 90 days ( for each month ) = That's how long it will take you on average to heal! ( Evade Relapses because this doubles the amount needed for recovery! )

  13. 90 days is nothing if you were a hardcore pmo abuser. Also I was addicted for 7 years. And I went 16mo hardmode mid 2018 to the end of 2019. I wasn't healed at all.... So this rule above doesn't apply.

  14. I'm sorry to tell you this, but you are wrong - you did a miss calculation!

You were an addict for 7 years, right ?

So let's give: every year a 90 days which is equivalent for 3 months - You estimation woulf be:

    7 x 3 = 21 months than you'll be healing.

According to your reply: you were only abstining for 16 months, which is a little far away from 21 months.

You should also note that you should avoid all type of P and all the social media related to P substitues! Otherwise you are delaying more and more your recovery!
And it's also important to work on a New Habits regarding your recovery! Starting from Doing Workout and Meditation! These are extremely important in your Recovery a long the way.

This is a long process it requires patience and patience! Stay Safe!

I'm not getting any erections at all guys.
Morning woods have gone. Tried getting hard this morning and only managed a semi.

23rd March I Orgasmed with porn after a very long period of no porn.

I then watched some porn on 1st April again (Me and my gf can't have sex for a month, hence falling back to porn after a long time)

All the sudden, PIED is back worse than ever. How, after 2 session am I impotent again. It makes no sense.

There definitely feels like permanent damage.

So during this time, you've seen no improvements? Can you get erections without porn?
